Description
In the human body, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (AAT) is a secretory protein produced by the liver. As a member of the serine protease inhibitor (serpin) family, AAT protects tissues and organs from damage by inhibiting proteases, particularly neutrophil elastase. In the absence of AAT, neutrophil elastase excessively hydrolyzes elastin in the alveolar walls, leading to respiratory complications such as emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). AAT deficiency can also cause hepatocyte damage, resulting in cirrhosis of the liver.
