Description
Lysozyme (LYZ) is a low-molecular-weight, alkaline enzyme that serves as a key component of the innate immune system. As a glycoside hydrolase, it lyses bacteria by hydrolyzing the β-1,4-glycosidic bonds between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine in the bacterial cell wall. This action degrades the cell wall's integrity, leading to rupture and bacterial death. In the human body, lysozyme is present in various immune cells, such as neutrophils and macrophages, and in mucosal secretions, where it provides a critical first line of surface-level defense.
