Description
Named after the Roswell Park Memorial Institute, RPMI 1640 is a modification of McCoy's 5A medium originally developed for the suspension and monolayer culture of human leukemia cells. It is also widely used for HeLa, Jurkat, MCF-7, PC12, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), astrocytes, and various cancer cells. RPMI 1640 is distinguished by its inclusion of reduced glutathione and high levels of vitamins, along with nutrients not found in EMEM or DMEM such as biotin, vitamin B12, para-aminobenzoic acid, and elevated concentrations of inositol and choline chloride.
RPMI 1640 Medium (ATCC Modification) is a modified formulation of standard RPMI 1640 medium. In this version, the glucose concentration has been increased from 2.0 g/L to 4.5 g/L, while the sodium bicarbonate concentration has been reduced from 2.0 g/L to 1.5 g/L.
